Singapore - Jumbo Seafood Restaurant

Family dinner at Jumbo Seafood restaurant at Serangoon Gardens Country Club since it's just a 3minutes drive from home and we had a $50 voucher to spend. It's the 'big name in seafood' and famous for chili crabs and mantou, as well as a few other dishes.

Love the decor in the club, so cosy and away from the hustle and bustle of the city crowds.

Ordered the usual favourite dishes, like the Supreme Seafood fried rice with XO sauce, Crispy Fried Chicken, Sambal Kang Kong and Mee Goreng.

I especially like the Supreme Seafood fried rice with XO sauce as the seafood condiments for the dish are very fresh and generous in servings, like the prawns, scallops, squids, fried together with egg and rice, which is lightly coated with a layer of onion oil, leaving a lightly burnt taste to the rice which is also slightly chewy. Simply delightful!

Moving on, Fried Prawn with Cereal (asked for it deshelled so that they became juicy little prawn balls coated richly with cereal bits), braised seaweed toufu coated in light brown sauce with shittake mushrooms and steamed broccolis, and not forgetting, the famous Jumbo chilli crabs.

Ordered the Sri Lankan chilli crabs which is steamed before being coated in a thick layer of savoury gravy which is a blend of chilly gravy cooked with eggs. Have it with the steamed mantou which is crispy on the outside but soft and tender on the inside.

Last but not least, the crispy baby squid which is marinated with oyster sauce and served on a bed of crackers and sprinkled with sesame seeds; mantou for the chilli crab gravy; and for dessert, yam paste with pumkin paste and gingko nuts.

The dessert was served warm and it was thick paste, not-too-sweet but sweet enough and you could feel the slight lumps of yam, indicating the freshness of the paste. Stir in the pumpkin paste for a sweet but healthy blend of dessert. A nice sweet end to a lovely filling dinner.

Location: Used to be at Serangoon Gardens Country Club but has since moved out. They have a few other outlets around the island and for this reason, I will leave the website here instead. http://www.jumboseafood.com.sg

Singapore - Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood (万隆华和海鲜菜馆)

Have been going to this zi char restaurant since young because its down the road from the famous Casuarina Prata shop (more on that another time). Zi Char literally means stir-fry dishes, so you can choose the different type of dish you want from the variety of meat, fish, vegetables etc on the menu.

This restaurant is nestled in the sembawang hills estate, with the pierce reservoir nearby, and sometimes if you are lucky (or unlucky), you may manage to catch sight of a monkey or two, or a family during the evening, out for an evening stroll (i'm kidding, its more like to steal food from you!).

This is the exterior of the place. It is an open air restaurant/coffeeshop kinda place. Make your reservations, especially if you're going about 7pm and its the weekends, because you may not be able to find seats.

the food service is pretty fast, and the food is always served hot and fresh. If you look closely at this photo, you'll notice a family of caucasians happily tucking into their meal.

The Yang Chow Fried Rice. Really tasty and well cooked, with a good mix of ingredients.
There's prawns, eggs, char siew and spring onions fried into the rice.

Sambal Kang Kong, which is not too spicy and cooked just right, so the stalks were still crunchy. But it was abit bland for my taste.
Rating: 3/5

San Lao Hor Fun (sliced fish). The Hor Fun was well cooked as the surface was smooth with nice texture, however, this dish was also abit bland for my taste. Could do with more flavor to the noodles.
The thick slices of fish was its redeeming point. Look at how thick and juicy the slabs of fish slices that came with the dish are!

My favourite dish of all from this place.
Prawn Paste Chicken Wings! Served warm, crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside with no trace of blood and the taste of prawn paste was there. Super dee-lish!
Can you see the crispyness and the juiciness? They only serve the mid joint of the wing, so saves you the hassle of using your hands to tear the chicken wing apart. Use of chopsticks are enough.

See the number of Zi Char awards this place has won over the years? Doesn't include the newspaper features and the magazines recommendations.

Certificates of Awards for good Zi Char food.

Overall Rating would be 3.75/5 cos of the good and fast service provided and quality food eaten.

Location is at 122 Casuarina Road
