MissFattyFoodie's Special- Sukiyaki

One of my favourite Japanese dish is sukiyaki and I have tried it in Perth before, unfortunately it was quite disappointing! My relatives in Japan told me that sukiyaki is something you eat at home, not at a restaurant. They were shocked that sukiyaki chains are very popular in Jakarta.
Anyway, my auntie gave me the recipe for sukiyaki so I can make it in Perth.
I usually buy the bottled sauce for sukiyaki, because I didn't know it is so easy to make the stock yourself!
(which is available in most asian grocery store)

Ingredients (serves 4):
Fresh egg yolks -to serve as dipping sauce
Panfried Onions
Cooked teriyaki beef slices
Silken Tofu
Cabbage (sliced up)
Spring Onions
Udon or the Konyaku noodles (the clear glass noodle type)
(add anything else that you like)

For the stock:
2 -3 cups of Japanese cooking sake
4 table spoons of brown sugar (or white sugar, doesn't really matter)
3 table spoons of soy sauce
additional water if the sake taste is too strong

So just add the stock to a pot/steamboat, throw in all the ingredients above when the stock is boiling, and enjoy the Sukiyaki!

When the ingredients are cooked, just dip them into the egg yolk as this is the way the japanese eat it. The yolk will coat the tofu/beef/veggies and give it such a nice creamy texture. Rice is a must to go with this dish as the stock is quite sweet and the rice will balance the taste out. Not everyone likes this dish as it is very sweet, but i absolutely love it! If you follow the simple recipe above, you can also make your own sukiyaki at home =)

Japan - Tokyo Day 2

Let the pictures do the talking....

Sensoji Temple (Asakusa station)

Nakamise Shopping Street on the way to the temple (one of the major highlights of my Tokyo trip)

Piping hot red bean cake. It took less than 1 minute for the stall owner to take it out of the oven and place it on my hand. So fresh!

dog in pearl necklace - nice !

Pretty boxes of cakes and cookes to buy.

Had lunch at this Udon shop along the street. Had their lunch special (look out for Japan's lunch specials as they are good value for money). So delicious! I ordered the unagi set which consists of plain udon, with unagi over rice, and egg custard. Everything was yummy, my partner enjoyed his tempura set as well.

Approaching Sensoji Temple at snail pace as there were so many things to see

Went to the Dougugai street which was walking distance away from sensoji temple. This is the place where they sell all food-related products like plastic models of food/utensils/bentos etc

Bought really cheap bentos!

Akihabara

that was the MOST DELICIOUS takoyaki we had during our japan trip. Please go there and try this! Even better than Osaka. This takoyaki was not the chewy kind, it was super soft and the filling was so hot (as it was freshly made) i burnt my tongue. We had a few takoyaki in japan but this was the best one we've tried.

After a long day out we went back to shinjuku where our hotel was.

The Shinjuku Southern Lights were so pretty. The entire stretch of road was filled with these bright lights.

Took a really short rest then went to explore shinjuku. It was impossible to stay in the room when u know the city is bustling outside even though it was past midnight

Even though we don't know japanese, we just walked into a izakaya (jap pub where they sell yummy side dishes) to experience the japanese culture. The yakitori WAS AMAZINGGGGGG. I've always liked yakitori but i've never tasted such delicious one before. The chicken was really tender, and the asparagus roll, potato wrapped with pork, beef, eggs, grilled chicken skin (freaking crispy) were all so yummy. And we get to see our order sizzling right before us. The food tasted so good with sake, should have ordered beer too!

We walked around the street and went to some arcade. These prizemachines were so addictive I couldnt stop!! All the games were also very advanced unlike the ones i've seen. We had a blast!

My 'prize' of the night. I don't know what it is actually. haha

Perth - Its Sundays Everyday!!

Almost every Saturday, I will go to either of these two places for breakfast/lunch or if you want a fancier name, brunch. They only open for breakfast and lunch, not for dinner so I can only go there on a saturday since i have to work!

Sundays Everyday is located in the suburb (south of the river) and nestled among all the shophouses in Myaree. The exterior does not stand out at all so most people who have not heard of this place will simply walk past the shop without giving it a second look.

Sundays Everyday has a few tables outside where people can dine alfresco style. There is plenty of free parking (suburban dining rocks) available. The restaurant is simple and small. It is owned by a japanese who is very friendly.
The restaurant is more like a lunchbar. It is very informal and there are many different types of ricebowls (don) (teriyaki fish, teriyaki beef, katsudon, curry don, teriyaki chicken, karaage...and more) pre-packed for take-away purchases. Don't let the word 'pre-packed' turn you off because the food here is all freshly made and the turn-over rate is very veryyy high. If you are dining in, your order will be freshly made and it comes in larger serving as well.

Let's go on to the food.......

Karaage Chicken Don, $8.90 - japanese fried chicken served on top of rice, topped with teriyaki sauce.
I have never tasted any karaage (in singapore or perth) better than this. The marinate is just nice, and their batter makes the chicken so crispy on the outside while retaining all the juices inside.
This huge bowl of karaage don is not for the faint-hearted. It is for VERY big eaters, a couple usually share a bowl. As you can see from the picture below, there is a lot of chicken. The bowl is almost filled to the brim with rice and I dont think any normal person can finish everything.
The chicken pieces are very big with its crispy golden skin still intact. The karaage chicken is quite lean which is different from the other 'fatty' ones that you usually eat elsewhere. If you don't feel like eating rice, you can order the karaage udon instead, which is just as good,

THE NEXT DISH IS MY FAVOURITE!
Teriyaki Chicken Udon, $9.20.
I think i have ordered this dish 20 times straight in a row instead of ordering other dishes from their menu.

The udon is chewy, cooked to the right texture and the dashi stock is very tasty.

The star of this dish is not the udon, but the teriyaki chicken whichis deep fried before being coated with thick teriyaki sauce. Up till this day, I have yet to find another teriyaki sauce that is similar to this. It is not too sweet and it is very thick, coating the tender chicken with its crispy skin. Again, I have yet to taste a teriyaki chicken better than this. I have tried teriyaki chicken in all sorts of restaurants from average eateries to fancy-cook-in-front-of-your face $$$ restaurants but this still tastes the best to me.

If you want your chicken to be crispy, please ask them to separate the chicken from the udon (which I did).

I can't believe I just shared one of perth's biggest secrets with all of you!
